چکیده

Legacy networks are often designed to operate with simple single-path routing, like shortest-path, which is known to be throughput suboptimal. On the other hand, previously proposed throughput optimal policies (i.e., backpressure) require every device in the network to make dynamic routing decisions. In this work, we study an overlay architecture for dynamic routing such that only a subset of devices (overlay nodes) need to make dynamic routing decisions. We determine the essential collection of nodes that must bifurcate traffic for achieving the maximummulticommodity network throughput. We apply our optimal node placement algorithm to several graphs and the results show that a small fraction of overlay nodes is sufficient for achieving maximum throughput. Finally, we propose a heuristic policy (OBP), which dynamically controls traffic bifurcations at overlay nodes. In all studied simulation scenarios, OBP not only achieves full throughput, but also reduces delay in comparison to the throughput optimal backpressure routing.

Load-Balanced One-hop Overlay Multipath Routing with Path Diversity

Overlay routing has emerged as a promising approach to improve reliability and efficiency of the Internet. For one-hop overlay source routing, when a given primary path suffers from the link failure or performance degradation, the source can reroute the traffic to the destination via a strategically placed relay node. However, the over-heavy traffic passing through the same relay node may cause...

Accurate Relay Selection for Improved Multipath Throughput in Internet Overlays

Distributed applications deployed over the Internet, such as in grids, clouds, or P2P networks, crucially depend on the speed of their Internet connections. A common solution is to exploit underlying network parallelism via multipath routing within an application-level overlay network. Accurately selecting appropriate relay hosts within an overlay, however, remains a challenging problem, freque...

Performance Analysis of Device to Device Communications Overlaying/Underlaying Cellular Network

Minimizing the outage probability and maximizing throughput are two important aspects in device to device (D2D) communications, which are greatly related to each other. In this paper, first, the exact formulas of the outage probability for D2D communications underlaying or overlaying cellular network are derived which jointly experience Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) and Rayleigh multipat...

Practical Algorithms for Distributed Network Control

Optimal routing and scheduling algorithms have been studied for decades, however several practical issues prevent the adoption of these network control policies on the Internet. This thesis considers two distinct topics in distributed network control: (i) maximizing throughput in wireless networks using network coding, and (ii) deploying controllable nodes in legacy networks. Network coding is ...

A Distributed Algorithm for Throughput Optimal Routing in Overlay Networks

We address the problem of optimal routing in overlay networks. An overlay network is constructed by adding new overlay nodes on top of a legacy network. The overlay nodes are capable of implementing any dynamic routing policy, however, the legacy underlay has a fixed, single path routing scheme and uses a simple work-conserving forwarding policy. Moreover, the underlay routes are pre-determined...
